Ana Popovic: New Release Blind For Love

Summer Finally Heats Up

I was awakened by the soft clanking of the window blinds in the early morning breeze. Just as I opened my eyes, Lucille, my golden retriever, ran up on the bed and lay down beside me. Placing her head on my chest she began her steadfast stare. Did she really remember last night’s promise of an early morning jaunt? As the sun began to make its presence, I nodded in approval and Lucille jumped off the bed and waited patiently for me by the front door. This was a very methodical mission. There was music to be listened to and a little exercise to be had.

My introduction to Ana Popovic’s music began with her 2007 release Still Making History. I heard some of her tunes from that particular album, but like most things in life the timing didn’t quite happen and I lost track… Just before Christmas of last year I was reminded by a friend about Popovic. The re-familiarization generated a burst of enthusiasm that had me craving for more. As a result, I did some research about her life and read about the tense surroundings in her early years in Belgrade during the Milosevic reign.

Even though Popovic and myself are from very different backgrounds, I found some interesting similarities in how both our families were influenced by their love and appreciation of music; especially the blues. So impressed with her talent, I felt the need to write an article for TheBluesBlogger site… That blog post generated lots of viewers and also some interesting comments and questions. Many of which were addressed in Popovic’s latest release Blind For Love. You can find that piece on Ana by clicking here.

Now I skimmed through Blind For Love several times since receiving it earlier in the week. In my typical fashion, I tend to savor things I think I’m going to enjoy for the right moment. One thing I noticed right off the bat was her songwriting skills had further matured since I listened last. Blind For Love features plenty of great blues, rock, jazz, and funky grooves along with some terrific guitar work put together in a slick concise package.

I was anxious for my outing with Lucille as I felt Popovic’s album may just be one of those summer albums to talk about. And when I hear an album with as much vigor as Blind For Love I find it very hard to keep still, so I turn that energy into a productive workout… I grabbed a quick coffee, got dressed and grabbed Lucille’s leash. Heading out the door, I realized that the timing was perfect. The morning air was cool and comforting, but there was no doubt the day was about to get hotter… I pressed play on my MP3 player and our excursion began.

Now as I have said many times before, when it comes to reviews I’m not going to give a blow by blow account of each and every song and note. If the music moves me, makes me reflect back on a moment, or creates an energy that spurs some creative thought, then I’m happy.

The opening track “Nothing Personal” did indeed start me off on the right track with its infectious pop groove. And the tempo would continue with the heavy hitting second track “Wrong Woman” and the foot tapping soulful “Steal Me Away.” Things slow down for the title track “Blind For Love” and “More Real,” but I’m not complaining about that either, this is a well thought out album…

MUSICIANS:

Ana Popovic: vocals & guitars
Ronald Jonker: bass
Andrew Thomas: drums
Mike Finnigan: keys
Tony Braunagel: drums, percussion, background vocals
Lenny Castro: percussion
Darrell Leonard: trumpet
Joe Sublett: sax
Julie Delgado, Kenna Ramsey, Billy Valentine: background vocals

Halfway Into the Album

Our morning run found us in our neighborhood park. I let Lucille off the leash and watched as she dash around the field with her golden smile. At this point I found myself repeating the next three songs “Putting Out the APB,” “Get Back Home to You” and “The Only Reason.” Extremely catchy songs with a great groove that picked up the pace again… Deciding to make our own way back home, I continued the rest of the album without repeating any more songs. “Part of Me” ( a lullaby written for her baby boy Luuk) and the closer “Blues for M” being the most noteworthy.

Popovic is currently one of Europe’s hottest blues-rock guitarists, and Blind For Love is further proof of a career that continues to blossom. Becoming the first European artist to be nominated for a W.C. Handy Award in Memphis for “Best New Artist Debut” in 2003, she has released a total of six albums with the last two on Eclecto Groove Productions. Popovic continues to mesmerize the audience and has a reputation for being very engaging.

Blind For Love was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Mark Dearnley (AC/DC, Tom Petty and Paul McCartney) and included many of the members of her touring band. Bassist Ron Jonker is a member of her band that in my previous article was questioned by his absence on the last album Still Making History. His presence is going to make not only listeners to Blind For Love very happy, but is going to also delight audiences on the road as the chemistry he has on stage with Popovic is hard to deny.

Later In The Day

With my faithful hound snoring at my feet, it was time to sit down and conclude this post… Obviously I really enjoyed this album. There’s no doubt blues purists may turn away from this release, but that’s always going to happen when you’re breaking new ground. Yes, I’ll admit Ana Popovic is very stunning, but you need to go beyond the looks and explore her talent. Whether you like it or not, she is a serious artist that continues to learn and will carve a path for a new generation of fans to follow. If you’re unfamiliar, then Blind For Love may be a good place to begin… Congratulations to everyone involved on this project, you have a real winner here!

And now its your turn. Are you familiar with her latest album or previous work? Have you seen her live before? Please add your comments below.

Cheers,

George Thorogood & The Destroyers: The Dirty Dozen

Saturday evenings is normally the time where I get the majority of my writing done for these posts. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, I ended up just staring at my computer monitor yesterday. The words just weren’t happening. So I did something that, believe it or not, I haven’t done in a long time. Instead of gazing at a monitor, I turned my attention to the television. Scanning through the channels, I noticed that the Disney film The Rookie just started. I’m a baseball fan and I always like movies regarding the sport. The timing seemed perfect as I could almost sense my batteries slowly being recharged… So what does baseball have to do with the blues? I probably could draw some allusions, but if you’re George Thorogood that’s where the story gets interesting.

A major New York Mets fan and baseball historian, George was a semi-pro ball player in Delaware in the seventies. Thorogood made the decision to become a musician in 1970 after seeing a John Paul Hammond concert. A second baseman, he was good enough at that level to be named rookie of the year and made the all star team. Thorogood continued playing baseball while carving a career in music. Several years later he formed a band called The Delaware Destroyers, and shortly after moved to Boston where they became regulars on the blues circuit.

Since the unveiling of his debut album in 1977, Thorogood and his band have toured with many of blues most recognized performers such as Hound Dog Taylor, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, Bo Diddley, Albert Collins, Johnny Johnson, Elvin Bishop, Eddie Shaw and Buddy Guy. Most of these artists, as well as Elmore James were major influences to Thorogood in a career that has generated 5 gold albums and many classic hits which will forever be weaved into our personal memory banks.

After a three year recording hiatus, George Thorogood & The Destroyers returns to Capital/EMI with his latest release The Dirty Dozen on July 28th. His 16th studio album in a career spanning over 30 years contains six new studio recordings and six additional tracks from the past; three of which were previously out of print in the U.S. Included on the album are songs written by blues legends such as Muddy Waters, Bo Diddley, “Sleepy” John Estes, Chuck Berry, Howlin’ Wolf and Willie Dixon. The Dirty Dozen will also be available on vinyl and the CD will be formatted like an authentic two sided vinyl LP where new songs represent “side one,” and rarities as “side two.”

Thorogood & The Destroyers will be on the road extensively this summer in support of the new album, appearing with soulful blues rocker Jonny Lang on several dates during the tour.

“This album is also a homecoming of sorts for us. It’s a real rocker, full of songs we’ve always loved playing, including some that our fans have told us they like a lot but haven’t been available for a while. We’re definitely going to be playing some of these songs on our tour. I’m ready to mix it up and crank it up, and we look forward to seeing everyone at the shows this summer.”

I just love what I’m hearing so far on The Dirty Dozen. It’s a fantastic blend of old/new and everyone appears to be in fine form indeed… Whenever I reminisce to the times when I first started getting into the bar scene, George Thorogood’s music becomes a central theme to those crazy teenage daze. I’m sure many of us have the same notion. Thorogood’s tunes were always buoyant, gritty and a good dose of rock ’n’ blues for an evening out.

What do you think? Were you aware of his passion for baseball? Does any of Thorogood’s music from yesterday or today bring back any reflective thoughts to mind? You’re comments are always welcome.

Twittering the Blues 2: Road Tunes

This past weekend TheBluesBlogger family visited our friends in the country. The last time we were there, I ended up in the hospital as a result of a dirt bike accident. A few days later feeling sore and foolish, I decided to pick 10 random songs that came to mind on Blip.fm. I also included updates to how I was feeling on Twitter with links to those songs. I then generated a post called Twittering the Blues: 10 Music Blips… This time around I’m happy to report I got through the evenings visit unscathed. But I did leave feeling the need to do a sequel.

Earlier that week I got back from my father/son summer road trip. It’s been a while since my son and I had the opportunity for just the two of us to hang out. During our trip we got to enjoy some swimming, water slides, baseball, and some miniature golf; all the fun stuff that goes along with summer. And along the way we listened to a lot of tunes…

My son is 13, and like his dad loves music. So for this post, I thought we’d both pick some of our favorite songs from the trip. Of course they also had to be available on Blip.fm… So below is the selection of songs old and new that we collectively agreed on. There was one in particular my son insisted be on the list. Can you guess which one? These music blips highlight the time we spent getting to our destinations in the car. I always did enjoy a good tune while traveling down the highway.

Blues Blip 1 of 10: Here we go everyone. Let’s start this trip off with – Albert Collins – Travellin’ South

Blues Blip 2 of 10: Always loved that feeling when summer holidays began – The Derek Trucks Band – Already free

Blues Blip 3 of 10: One of my favorites. And currently on tour – Johnny Winter – Life Is Hard

Blues Blip 4 of 10: My son loves the blues. Here’s one of his favorites – Jonny Lang – A Quitter Never Wins

Blues Blip 5 of 10: Hmmm… An interesting choice. Who u think picked this one? – Steely Dan – Chain Lightning

Blues Blip 6 of 10: Time to get up and head to the next town – Ray Charles – Hit the Road Jack

Blues Blip 7 of 10: Now this goes back. Beck still sounds as good as ever – Jeff Beck Group – Definitely Maybe

Blues Blip 8 of 10: Remembering the legends – Stevie Ray Vaughan – Little Wing

Blues Blip 9 of 10: This one gets you grooving – Joe Louis Walker – Blues of the Month Club

Blues Blip 10 of 10: Goodnight all. Hope you enjoyed the tunes. Have a great week! – Albert King – Call It Stormy Monday

Evening time was quiet and I got the opportunity to finish a writing project I was working on. In addition I completed the revised Junior Wells piece you see below. Most of all I spent some great bonding time with my son. All around it was a good break. Mondays come around all too fast in the summer time it seems… So how about you? How’s your summer been so far?
